چکیده
Several groups have demonstrated that healthy individuals can present the t(14;18) translocation. In this report, the presence of the translocation was examined in healthy blood donors in Brazil, a country considered an ethnic melting pot. The translocation was detected by nested PCR in 227 peripheral blood samples from individuals with different ethnic backgrounds. The t(14;18) translocation was found in 45 of 85 White individuals (52.94%); in 57 of 72 Black individuals (79.17%); and in 68 of 70 individuals (97.14%) of Japanese-descent. In conclusion, the frequency of the t(14;18) translocation in the Brazilian population varies according to the ethnic background.

Geographic Heterogeneity of the AML1-ETO Fusion Gene in Iranian Patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Background: The human AML1 gene, located on chromosome 21, can be fused to the AML1- eight-twenty-one (ETO) oncoprotein on chromosome eight, resulting in a t(8;21)(q22;q22) translocation. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) associated with this translocation is considered a distinct AML with a favorable prognosis. Due to the various incidences of the translocation, which is associated with geographic ...
متن کاملTranslocation t(14;18) in healthy individuals: preliminary study of its association with family history and agricultural exposure.
BACKGROUND The t(14;18) translocation, present in 90% of follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL), has been found to exist in low levels in healthy persons. Its clinical/prognostic significance in healthy populations is unknown, and risk factors for its development have not been determined. Our objectives were to assess the prevalence of t(14;18) in individuals without NHL, comparing residents ...
متن کاملThe pattern and frequency of t(14;18) translocation and immunophenotype in Asian follicular lymphoma.
AIMS Follicular lymphoma is frequently associated with t(14;18)(q32;q21) translocation. This study was undertaken to determine the pattern of Bcl-2, CD10 and Bcl-6 expression in relation to t(14;18) translocation in follicular lymphoma from a cohort of a multi-ethnic Asian population. METHODS AND RESULTS Sixty-two cases of follicular lymphoma were retrieved for immunohistochemistry, and t(14;...

Healthy radio-exposed individuals who received low levels of Cesium-137 radiation during the accident that occurred in Goiânia in 1987, their families and controls were tested for the detection of t(14;18)-rearranged B cells in peripheral blood by using a highly sensitive, real-time quantitative PCR method. The chromosomal translocation t(14;18)(q32;q21) is characteristic of follicular ly...
متن کاملFollicular lymphoma-like B cells in healthy individuals: a novel intermediate step in early lymphomagenesis
Follicular lymphoma is one of the most common adult lymphoma, and remains virtually incurable despite its relatively indolent nature. t(14;18)(q32;q21) translocation, the genetic hallmark and early initiating event of follicular lymphoma (FL) pathogenesis, is also present at low frequency in the peripheral blood of healthy individuals. It has long been assumed that in healthy individuals t(14;1...
